The TV series tells how the “Sun King,” Louis XIV, transformed a relatively modest hunting lodge in Versailles into a majestic palace that became the envy of Europe.
Season 01, Episode 01
France, 1667. A year after the death of his mother, Louis XIV, 28, already holds the reins of supreme power. Haunted by the Fronde and the target of several plots, the young ruler is seeking to assert its authority. Then an idea takes root in him, the idea of establishing the seat of power outside Paris. He moved to Versailles, which is when a hunting lodge where he likes to receive his court. He began to transform Versailles into a trap to remove the nobles of the capital, to keep them under control, and gradually make the castle a gilded prison. The sumptuous palace will satisfy, in passing, his dreams of greatness.
Season 01, Episode 02
The queen has given birth, the whole palace is abuzz with rumors about the newborn. His advisers are pushing Louis to go to war. According to them, the king of France can no longer stand by and watch its rivals grow and prosper; he also has to show its power. Having been brought up in the shadow of his brother Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans, has dreamt of glory, hoping to find it on a battlefield. He asked Louis to give him the right to conduct, for him, the fight against the Spaniards.
