At Shakedown ice cream parlor in San Francisco, all the flavors of a German chocolate cake – complete with sweet, coconutty pecan topping — are enjoyed in a whole new (drinkable) way in the German Chocolate Cake Shake. And a classic ice cream flavor gets an upgrade in Banana Cookies and Cream, which starts with a rum and bananas blend and includes chunks of homemade chocolate sandwich cookies.In Portland, Oregon, Palace Cakes purees an entire orange – peel and all – with carrots for its unique four-layer carrot cake, which is topped with dozens of lemony cream cheese frosting dots and toasted coconut. And Elsie’s Parlor in Brooklyn, New York, uses an old family recipe as the springboard for its innovative doughnuts, like the brown-butter-dipped Cannella al Burro, tossed with a fragrant blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace and cardamom. And they use a classic New York cookie as the inspiration for the Black and White Doughnut, which is fully-covered in dark chocolate ganache on one side, and white chocolate ganache on the other.
