Sheridan Smith steps into the role of Charmian, the wife of the infamous great train robber, Ronnie Biggs. Chronicling Charmian's dramatic life, from that fateful moment when her path crossed with Ronnie (Danny Mays) as a teenager, to the devastating consequences of the Great Train Robbery in 1963. Having used the Packer money to purchase a new house, Charmian is missing Ron. He is lonely as well, barely scraping a living as a roofer in a Rio suburb. Tragedy strikes after their eldest son, Nicky, is killed in a car crash. Ron ends up sliding into a pit of drinking, drugs and women and meets a beautiful young Brazilian dancer by the name of Raimund. He decides to arrange one last payday and then turn himself in. He talks to a Daily Express journalist to sell him his life story. He ends up being betrayed though when the reporter tips off the police and an old adversary, Detective Chief Inspector Jack Slipper, arrests Ron in Rio.

Ron’s picture is shown in an Australian magazine and he and Charmain decide that they have no alternative but to move again, and set off for Melbourne. Charmian gets a job working in a biscuit factory and Ron is foreman at a building site, and they soon settle into a Melbourne suburb life. A London ‘grass’ ends up letting slip to the authorities that Ronnie Biggs is hiding ‘somewhere in Australia’ and his picture flashes up on the evening news in Melbourne. Charmian refuses to allow him to give in, and insists he hides out for the night at a motel. She ends up being arrested though and the boys are taken in to care. She ends up agreeing to sell her story to the Packer organization in exchange for a lawyer to represent her in court. The lawyer manages to win her freedom and helps her get the boys out of care. Ron is still in hiding and he and Charmian risk it all by meeting one last time before he skips the country, on a steamer making its way to Rio De Janiero.

Charmian begins an ill advised affair with Alan. After she becomes pregnant she can’t risk an abortion at a clinic and has to use a back street abortionist. She becomes really ill but manages to pull through. She the gets the news she’s been waiting for which is that Ron is planning to escape. She helps organize the escape by getting money to the gang helping Ron and giving herself a cast iron alibi by taking the children to Whipsnade Zoo. The escape attempt goes well and Ron becomes the country’s most wanted man. Charmian is watched by the police but she bides her time and finally, after being separated from him for almost a year, meets up with Ron in France. His appearance shocks her her, he has undergone crude and largely unsuccessful plastic surgery. Ton tells her that he is planning on them all starting a new life in Australia. It will cost him over half of his robbery money, but they will be able to turn over a fresh leaf in a country that asks no questions. Charmian arrives with the boys in Darwin a few months later but Ron is not there to meet her. After Ron finally turns up at her hotel he tells her it’s all been a misunderstanding. They soon settle into their new lives and Charmain gives birth to another child.

Charmian is distraught as he tips his share out in front of her she can’t believe Ron would put their life in jeopardy. She ends up feeling though that she has no option but to stick with Ron and help him disperse the money to safe houses. Ron is soon arrested though and Charmian struggles to keep it together as the press descends on her She is helped by Ruby and Alan Wright, a mother and son who are friends of Reynolds.

Charmian Brent is on a train who is not able to take up the place she won at university because her father has refused to support her any more. Frustrated and disillusioned with life, she is chatted up on the train by Ron Biggs. Charmian is soon smitten, and they begin dating. After her father discovers that Ron has convictions for petty crimes he hits the roof, banning Charmian from ever seeing him again. Charmain and Ron decide to elope with £200 Ron has forced her to steal from her employers to fund their escape. They end up being caught following a dramatic car chase . Ron is given six months imprisonment, Charmian a suspended sentence. Following his release, Charmain becomes pregnant to force her father to consent to her getting married. Things go well for the next few years until Ron becomes desperate for money and turns to friend called Bruce Reynolds who at that moment planning the biggest robbery in British history.
