Suzy Klein welcomes the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to the Royal Albert Hall for their Proms debut. Long Yu conducts the orchestra in a programme that includes Qigang Chen’s The Five Elements, Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances and, with 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition winner Eric Lu, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23 in A major.

Strauss Sibelius and Prokofiev

Homage to Nina Simone
Clara Amfo introduces a prom which celebrates the jazz and blues legend Nina Simone. The Metropole Orkest is led by Jules Buckley, and they are joined by Ledisi, Lisa Fischer and other singers in this tribute to the acclaimed singer, songwriter and political activist. The titles include standards such as Feeling Good, My Baby Just Cares for Me and I Put a Spell on You.

Sheku Plays Elgar
BBC 2016 Young Musician winner Sheku Kanneh-Mason performs Elgar's passionate Cello Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and their music director Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla. They also celebrate the centenary of Mieczysław Weinberg, the man Shostakovich hailed as ‘one of the most outstanding composers’ of his day – with a rare performance of his Symphony No.3, a work that combines folk melodies and dances with confessional urgency. The concert opens with Dorothy Howell’s radiant tone-poem Lamia (first performed, like Elgar’s concerto, 100 years ago) and also includes The Way to Castle Yonder, a suite from the much-missed Oliver Knussen’s opera Higglety Pigglety Pop!

Queen Victorias Playlist
Petroc Trelawny and Suzannah Lipscomb introduce an evening of music to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth. The Prom features the music of her favourite composer, Mendelssohn, including his ‘Scottish’ Symphony and First Piano Concerto, which will be performed by Stephen Hough on Victoria’s own piano, loaned by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection. There is also a suite from Arthur Sullivan’s ballet Victoria and Merrie England and songs composed by her consort, Prince Albert.
