In an effort to cope with death, we shroud it in ritual and surround it with taboos. And what one culture sees as a normal way to deal with the dead, for another might be forbidden. In Nepal, a body is burned beside a sacred river. In America, a corpse is beautified for an open casket funeral. In Germany, human bodies are sometimes put on public display.
Outsiders
In every society there are people who live on the fringe and must suffer the consequences. Some choose to be outsiders, but others are forced to be. In Nepal, leprosy sufferers are shunned and confined to colonies because of their disease. In India, rat catchers are despised because of the vermin they pursue. And in Australia, human scavengers feed on the food their city throws away. In this episode, we’ll find out what it’s like to live on the outside.
Prostitution
Prostitution is as old as history itself, and today it takes many forms, from dangerous streetwalking to five-star luxury. In the developing world, many young girls are sold into sex slavery and face a lifetime of disease and destitution. Meet Maya, one of roughly 2,000 prostitutes in a Bangladeshi sex slum who service passing truckers for around $4 an hour.
