After four weeks of heats, 40 hopefuls have been whittled down to the most promising 12 – and now they face the knockout stage, beginning with either a main or a pudding based on briefs by judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace. The top nine then go straight to the next stage, while the bottom three face a cook-off in which they have to come up with their showstopper dish – and with only two more places available, only the best will do.
