Just Henry is adapted for television by Michael Chaplin from Michelle Magorian’s acclaimed novel. The story is set in post-Second World War Britain and follows the life of Henry who is growing up in unsettled household that consists of his mother Maureen stepfather Bill and his paternal grandmother.
Episode 1:
Henry has been suffering from awful nightmares which everyone thinks are being caused by having living through a war, and the fact that he’s never really overcome his father’s death. Henry’s grandmother ends up encouraging him to show a disinterest in his education because his father, Joseph Dodge always believed education was a waste of time. After his late father’s war medal for bravery gets posted through the door Henry wants to know more about the way he died. Mrs Beaumont, a new teacher at his school, slowly helps him to see the world differently. With some other students, he has to work on a school project about cinema and they unlikely group forced to spend time together. When Henry pays a visit to his father’s grave a man introduces himself to him claiming to be his father. Grace with the help of Mrs Beaumont attempt to discover the truth and the police become involved.
