Great Continental Railway Journeys follows Michael Portillo as he attempts to retrace the journeys featured in George Bradshaw's Continental Railway Guide. Leaving Britian behind, armed with his 1913 guide, he follows the most popular route of the Edwardian traveller through Europe.

Season 1 , Episode 1 - "London to Monte Carlo"
Michael's first stop on his adventure is Paris where he absorbs the atmosphere of La Belle Epoque, before making his way south to the Cote D'Azur where he samples the Edwardian highlife and finds out why the area attracted the rich and artistic alike. He concludes his journey as he arrives at the gaming tables in Monte Carlo.
