Season 01 . Episode 10 – “Cyprus-Island of Hope”
Award-winning journalist Mariana van Zeller and acclaimed chef Michael Voltaggio travel to Cyprus, an island nation literally split by religion and language. In 1963, violence broke out between the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots creating a patrolled U.N. buffer zone and heavy tension in Nicosia, the capital city. Mariana and Michael visit both sides and notice the differences between the two lifestyles. The Turkish side is more Arabic with smaller shops, while the Greek side is more contemporary and full of life. In the city of Larnaca, they meet a Greek Cypriot who feels that the presence of the Turkish army is an illegal invasion. Later, they visit the abandoned Nicosia International Airport where the tension between the groups crystalized in an armed battle. In hopes to catch a glimpse of the now abandoned town of Famagusta, an old tourist hot spot that is now sealed off by the Turks, Mariana and Michael go fishing in the buffer zone.
